Hill House Hockey Team make History at Olympic Park

Hill House’s Under 16 Girls completed their epic season by winning the silver medal in the Tier 2 National Cup Finals at the Olympic Stadium in London this week.

The cup run started in September and included victories in earlier rounds over St.Peter’s York (4-0), Stonyhurst (7-0), Barnard Castle (2-0) and King’s Chester (5-1) . A tight semi-final against Uppingham School saw the Doncaster girls run out 1-0 winners, which earned a placed in the national final.

Arriving at the National Hockey Stadium in the Olympic Park, the girls were in excellent spirits for their final against Prior’s Field School, from Surrey. Cheered on by a large crowd, the game was very tight, with excellent skills and commitment from both sides, and with limited goalscoring opportunities. Captain Connie Crowther, Holly Pinchin and Leah Unwin worked tirelessly in midfield to take control of the game, and Connie Fairclough and Isabel De Roeck made several incursions into the opposition penalty area. With the opposition making a break from midfield, a rare shot through a crowded area put the opposition ahead just before half-time.

In a compelling second half, the Hill House girls dominated possession but found the Prior’s Field defence uncompromising. Annie Green, Megan Usher and Olivia Jones-Quartey snuffed out most opposition forays, but with the girls pushing for an equalizer, they were caught out by a late second goal to finish the game 0-2.

The girls were delighted to be awarded their silver medals, making them the highest-placed hockey team in Hill House history. Director of Sport Katie Vickers said "this cup run has been such a wonderful story for these exceptional girls, and to finish by having the honour of playing at the Olympic Stadium will be a memory they will have for a lifetime. We are very proud of their success and look forward to trying to go one step further next year."
