National Finals Ahead for Hill House U16 Girls Hockey!

The 16 Girls Hockey Team Lined up on the Pitch

Hill House Under 16 Girls have underlined the school’s reputation for hockey by extending their national cup run in a victorious semi-final against Uppingham School, winning a 1-0 thriller and earning themselves a national final at the English Hockey Stadium at Lee Valley, London, in March.

Dominating early possession in front of a big crowd, both of home and travelling supporters, the girls fell into a good early rhythm, although the highlight of the first half was in defence, with a smart reaction save from a penalty corner from goalkeeper Jessica Eggitt.

After a growing number of Hill House penalty corners, captain Connie Crowther managed to convert a close range shot to take a 1-0 lead. After several unsuccessful short corners, the comfort of a second goal remained elusive and the Uppingham girls began to dominate the final quarter as Hill House nerves became frayed both on the pitch and in the stand. Despite superb defensive work by Olivia Jones Quartey, Annie Green, Emilia North and Megan Usher, and tireless work in midfield from Crowther, Holly Pinchin and Leah Unwin, the visitors had several attempts on goal in the closing minutes, one of which struck the post, and another brought a world-class reaction save from keeper, Eggitt.

As the final whistle blew, Hill House girls and spectators erupted at the outstanding result. After a long cup run which has taken in such oppositions as Stonyhurst, St Peter’s, Barnard Castle and Kings Chester, the girls now have one more game to play with the chance to be national champions.

Headmaster David Holland was thrilled with the results, saying "huge congratulations to the girls, commiserations to Uppingham for a valiant effort, and massive thanks to Mrs Vickers, Mrs Donnelly and colleagues for the inspirational coaching which makes Hill House hockey the success it is. I am so proud of the coaches and players, and we all look forward to another national final with great excitement!"
