Welcome From the Headmaster It is my privilege to introduce you to life at Hill House School. We are a very busy school, and the hard work of staff, pupils and Governors has seen the school thrive over the years. Hill House is a happy, vibrant and caring school, blessed with a dedicated staff and supportive parents. Our school is selective, in that children must be able to prosper at the school. We work hard with each child to give them the opportunity to thrive. I am very proud of our team who work very hard and support each other. The pupils embrace the wonderful opportunities provided to them and our outstanding pastoral care means that each child enjoys being part of the Hill House community. The school was judged ‘outstanding’ in our most recent inspection. Visitors frequently comment on the family atmosphere at Hill House. I hope that you will be able to pay us a visit to see for yourself. Mr David Holland Headmaster
Who We Are Founded in 1912, Hill House School, originally a boys’ school, merged with St Mary’s Girls School in 2002 to become co-educational day school for pupils from 3 to 18. Our community forms a huge part of our identity and we are very grateful to have an experienced Senior Management Team and a Board of Governors who are experts in relevant specialisms. Part of our mission statement is to provide high quality independent education in a supportive, congenial and family-based community. We focus on the holistic education of our pupils within a framework of encouraging and disciplined pastoral care. We also make the pursuit of excellence and the provision of outstanding opportunities central to every aspect of the school’s work. An Award-Winning School Over the years, Hill House has been recognised by a number of national awards: Times Parent Power: Independent Secondary School of the Year in the North, 2025 (Winner) TES Outstanding Community Initiative Award, 2016-17 (Winners) TES Outstanding Strategic Initiative Award, 2012-13 (Winners) TES Independent School of the Year, 2012-13 (Winners) The Headmaster is a member of HMC, the Heads’ organisation which represents the top 300 independent schools in the world.
A Thriving School Previously housed on two sites, the merging of the schools saw us complete an £8 million move to the Officers’ Quarters of former RAF Finningley in September 2008. Since the relocation, the school has developed: • A purpose-built Sixth Form Centre. • An Astro Turf Hockey Pitch. • Our 18-acre Sports Grounds and Pavilion. • A modern Dining Hall. • A Forest School. • Our new Art and Music Schools. • A new Fitness Centre. • A new Staff Common Room Suite. Hill House is flourishing, having doubled in size in the last ten years. Academically, we are going from strength to strength. GCSE results are normally around 60% A*/A, with A Level results around 50% A*/A. Our most recent ISI inspection reflected the hard work of the staff and pupils, with the school judged to be outstanding in every category.
Outstanding Teaching Our class sizes are small, most with fewer than twenty in a class. Our pupils have natural enthusiasm and appreciation, helping to make teaching at Hill House a truly rewarding experience. September 2020 saw us introduce a new curriculum and structure to the school day. This has allowed us to increase the length of lessons, introduce senior school Academic Societies, enhance our holistic education by introducing life and leadership skills to the curriculum and embrace digital technologies with the Bring Your Own Device scheme. We recognise that staff are central to the success of Hill House and encourage those who wish to develop their expertise and career. We generously assist staff who are looking to take further qualifications, including Masters’ degrees and Doctorates, and fully support staff CPD. This is highlighted by the use of Mentors and Master Teachers, allowing teaching staff to share knowledge and keeping the school at the forefront of innovation in education.
Fulfilment Beyond the Classroom We believe that life outside the classroom should be rich and rewarding. Hill House offers a very full and vibrant programme of extra-curricular activities, which are additional to those offered as part of the normal school day. Around 100 activities are offered each term, which take place either before school, at lunchtime or after school. All staff are involved in the pastoral system, and we hope to see you make the most of whatever passions you bring to your role. Perhaps you would like to be involved with our theatrical productions or could bring your expertise to our debating teams. Maybe you would like to take your interest in sport to the next level, or fancy developing your adventurous side with Duke of Edinburgh or World Challenge. There are numerous school trips both local and overseas which staff enjoy. Whatever your passions, we welcome you to join in with the many extracurricular activities we offer our students, helping you bond with the children outside the classroom. Support Staff Keep Us Ticking We know that support staff are vital to the success of the school and appreciate the hard work that these teams put in “behind the scenes”. Our Facilities, Drivers, IT, Marketing, HR, Administration and Finance teams work incredibly hard, and we have invested in their development over the years as the school has grown. Many of our support teams have made use of an apprenticeship scheme, with a high proportion of participants going on to take full time positions at Hill House School. Support staff share the same additional benefits as teachers and have the opportunity to join a pension plan. Good Health Matters At Hill House, we know that the physical and mental wellbeing of our staff is of critical importance. That is why we offer all staff the opportunity to make use of the Westfield Health Cash Plan. This plan provides cash back on essential health care such as dentistry, physiotherapy and eyesight tests. It offers access to health and wellbeing services including emergency doctors and counsellors, as well as health and lifestyle screenings. The Cash Plan also offers monetary rewards through its online shopping system. Alongside this, we have a Staff Wellbeing Committee with representatives from across the whole school, who meet regularly to ensure that the health and wellbeing of staff remains at the forefront of everything we do.
